Towing with a 1.6 Lacetti

Hello,

Can anyone make any recommendations for a 4 berth end-bathroom model, worth about £2-3k that can be towed by a 1.6 Lacetti with a max tow of 1200kg?

Been looking around but not found much that won't stretch the tow limit of my car.

The Lacetti is to be replaced next year by a Mondeo or similar (which should cope much better with towing) so won't be towing the caravan too much with the Lacetti.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated. The wife and I have decided that a caravan would be a great bonus for cheap holidays here and abroad.

Many thanks

Ed

Not many current caravans but if you buy a copy of the fantastic magazine that provides this forum, you may find one listed in the new caravan guide, but it's doubtful. However if you're looking for one a few years old, check out the Bailey Ranger and Discovery models. A 470/4 Ranger from around 2000 is quite roomy and has a MTPLM of 1159kg.

P.S. I've no idea of the kerb weight of a Lacetti or the nose weight limit. Make sure you understand these as well as the max tow weight.

Hi there,

Have had a look on the Autotrader website to try to find additional weight info on my car. Managed to find the following:

Minimum kerb weight - 1185kg

Max towing weight (braked) - 1200kg

Max towing weight (unbraked) - 610kg

Gross vehicle weight - 1660kg

Max loading weight - 475kg

Hope this helps as the Mrs is very keen to get looking for a caravan!

Many thanks,

Edward

Well in theory it looks like you could tow the caravan I mentioned previously but I wouldn't recommend it if you have no towing experience. You would have to load the car and caravan very carefully, and your progress would be very slow when loaded down with holiday gear. I suggest getting the Mondeo early or start with a smaller van and forget the end bathroom. There may be some caravans less than 1000 kg from the 90's with end bathrooms but I don't know of any. Perhaps members with longer caravan experience may know?
