Hi,

Has anyone got any experience or knowledge of towing with a 2 Door Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Petrol? I'm limited to 3500kg on my licence, however the weights of this car (Gross Vehicle Weight = 2019kg, Kerbweight = 1795kg) would enable me to be able to tow a large(ish) caravan and keep within the law.

However, I'm not dure of it's towing stability due to its short length.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks
Anthony

Twan, I think you're probably right to be concerned about the length of the truck. Many many years ago I towed with a Lada Niva 4x4, aand it was possibly the worst towing experience ever! It was ideal in that the distance front the centre of the rear axle to the towball was about as short as it is possible to get, but sadly the wheelbase wasn't much longer! It literally bounced from bump to bump, taking the caravan with it. Great little off-road car though.
Yours would not be a combo I would want, but then neither would I want to tow with a swb Land Rover. My regular tug is a Range Rover Classic LSE, which is 8" longer wheelbase than standard, and the difference between it and a standard RR is outstanding.

The maximum MTPLM of the caravan would need to be about 1480kg so single axle. The Jeep will have no issue towing, but if you hit cross winds towing will become very hairy. Same applies if overtaking or being over taken on a motorway by a HGV. Seat of pants driving.
If the Jeep is relatively new or one used for off road a lot, it may be better to buy a normal car for towing. Other option is go for a Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee, but if you do, look for the GC model 2005 - March 2006 as a lower tax band which has the Mercedes Benz 3.0L diesel engine.
