I am thinking about buying a Freelander 2. Can anyone let me have comments, good and bad, about owning and also towing with one.

Thanks for your feedback.

Hi chris

I've just had a FL2 about 2 weeks ago. Whilst I havent yet towed with it , its a very good driving vehicle and the performance amases me.

I've got the GS varient (Auto Gbox) with the Sports styling pack fitted (which gives it 19" alloys) looks the dogs doodahs.

Its too new to give a lived in view but I've owned several Freebies in the past and always liked them and the FL2 is a massive step up.

Things you may want to note are the boot level is a bit high , so if you have dogs they may have some problems jumping in the back (well my lazy Retrievers do !!!). Also , as with the previous FL , if you need to push the drivers seat fully back then the back seat leg room would be a little restricted.

I've found the seats to be very snug and supportive and , in my opionion , better than the Merc ML I had before. That was todate was of the most comfortable cars I've owned.

Going back to the varient , dont go for the base S model as this doesn't get the Terrain Response system and has virtually no options as standard. Most dealers are doing S 'specials' at good prices but dont be tempted.

The model range is S , GS , XS , SE and HSE.

I went to a couple of dealers and they all seemed to say that buyers are going for the GS or SE varient. The XS seems to be neither one or the other and the cost doesn't justify what is has over the GS or doesn't have over the SE.(hope that makes sense?)The HSE is way too expensive.

If you're looking to change soon then Landrover has just released its company Fleet vehicles to the dealers so there's some good specc'ed up cars coming through.

Although I've got the Auto box I drove a manual last week (when mine went back in to have the tracker fitted). Both versions perform very well , and looking on the trip computer the manual seemed to record mpg of about 32 and talking to the Sales rep he was doing most of his driving in rush hour type conditions.

Mine at present is reading 21-22 but some of this is becuase the first week I was doing trips of 1-2 miles only and the car didn't even warm up properly. I'm back to normal driving this week and it now creeping up to better numbers 23-24, and thats city driving. I'm looking at this moving toward 26-27 once I'm back to my normal driving pattern , and as said thats stop start rush hour traffic values.

Other info I can offer is that the towbar fitted was about

Hi, I met a chap with a FL2 manual and he told me that he got 37mpg on amix of M,A and rural roads. He showed me the trip computer and sure enough it was at just slightly under 37mpg. He had checked the mpg by topping up the tank over a period of 3 months.

Cheers

Chris,

Ive had my FL2 (manual) for 15 months now and have been very pleased with it. Reliability so far has been fine, and fuel consumption has settled down to the low 30's for everyday commuting to high 30's on good runs. A recent trip with the caravan max weight 1500kg, and the computer said 27.9 mpg.

It took the best part of 10000 miles for the engine to loosen up to give these figures though.

Freelander 2 wasn't announced until 2006 - a Freelander on a 51 plate must be an original Freelander.

Chris

I waited a long time to get a Freelander and eventually decided on the TD4 GS manual. Its got every thing I need, dealt with lookers at Bury St Edmunds, a guy by the name of Marc Driver, he was superb from the first phone call to collection of the vehicle, dealt with us as individuals explained everything and understood our needs, didn't try to sell us something we didn't want. he was prepared to do a deal as well. I did purchase a boot liner/tray, a god send, expensive but worth it.

Driving the vehicle 65 miles to home in March it returned 41.7 mpg, general driving around town its giving me about 36 mpg.

Towed with it the first time early April (We have a Swift Challemger 540 1500Kgs)in quite strong winds for 100 miles, no problems. My previous vehicle Mondeo 2ltr TDCI that towed the van well but I certainly noticed a big difference especially the ease the FL2 towed it and the stability. It returned me 27 mpg.

I had a detachable tow bar fitted at Indespension

Hi Chris,

I have a FL2 XS Auto 2.2 TD4 which I have towed with since July last year. I cannot fault it as a towcar, it is definately the most stable car I have personally driven for towing my caravan, particularly in strong cross winds etc. You feel very safe and it tows effortlessly which you would expect. On the downside it is a little bit thirsty and I only return bewteen 20-23 mpg from mine which has now done 10,000 miles. I had the rear differential fail after driving back from Spain with the van last year. I was not a happy bunny at the time it happened but it was repaired under warranty and I have had no other problems at all. Would I buy another one? Most definately, I love the vehicle to bits and does everything that I want it to do.

Hi Chris

I know this is post is quite old now but we've just got back from the first outing towing with our FL2 GS Auto

Having had a Merc ML270 CDi Auto before I can safely say the FL2 coped as well if not better then the ML.

The van was far more stable (as i expalined in an earlier post the ML was a very bouncy ride and this was being transferred onto the van).

Yesterdays journey back was in some fairly brisk (nee strong)winds and again the car coped very well (towed in simlar conditions with the ML and the FL2 wins hands down).

My only question mark at present is that the caravan seems to set up nose down (where as the ML was almost level) and I wasnt sure if this was right. But having seen a few FL2s towing last week they all seem the same. I only question this as my car has the Sports Styling pack and seems to sit a little lower to the ground than standard FL2s (might just be me though!!!!!).

All that said we made the right choice to change and thats a big statement as I loved the ML.

MPG , we got 22 going and 20 coming back (but that was it very strong head winds for nearly 200 miles) towing a 1400kg van with 2 adults , 1 child , and 2 x 30kg dogs in the boot.

All in all a good car and I get out of it at the end of a journey as fresh as when I started. Thats a big plus as I have a long term neck and back injury and a lot of cars crease the hell out of me after just a few miles.

The VED is Band F for both Manual and Auto.

Cant help with new costs , but hold out for a deal. Dont believe the dealers when they say they cant do anything and that they're selling every one that comes off the line.

Insurance , will depend on your profile but I've just gone with Liverpool Victoria for
