I know it might be considered heresy , but I am not impressed with Towsafe ,I tried it once at the NEC for free and they got the towing limit on our 55 plate Honda CRV totaly wrong, we had to get them confirmed right by Honda , the limit is workoutable on the VIN plate as well ,when I was shown how, shame, I cannot remember how it is done now. A Pal had the same problem with his Ford recently, when I wrote to Towsure they wrote back a bland letter saying they rely on the makers info, true , but then how come the owners of the cars get told different figures from the same makers. Why in the few instances I know of people getting the Towsafe figures, are they are given them wrong ?

Hi Paul C

Your experience reinforces one of my crusades: you cannot assume the data you find on a third party web site is accurate. Especially where safety and your legal position is concerned you should always check the data with the appliance (car/caravans etc) handbook or the manufacturer or the manufacture official dealer.

You would have a defence if you claimed you relied only on one of these third party sites.

They quoted the minimum of the Nissan kerbweight range for the X Trail for all the models when I tried it a while ago

As has been said before weighbridge is the only way to get an accurate figure

That is if the weighbridge is accurate !

You said that Towsafe got the towing limit, quote: "totally wrong". Of course, it all depends on how far off they were and what you would describe as being "totally wrong". The legal limit is quite specific, so assuming that manufacturers' data is used, there is not much one can get wrong there. Any lower recommended limit, based on the 85% formula for example, can only be a guideline and it would be too much to expect the accuracy of any database result to be within a

That goes to confirm JohnL's recommendation to always crosscheck database results for yourself first. In your case, Towsafe were obviously using incorrect rather than inaccurate data.
