I have just purchased the Toyota Avensis 1.8 Petrol Tourer (2006 Model). I would be interested to hear from anybody who has towed with this model. I do not have a caravan at the moment but intend to purchase one in the New Year. I know that the maximum towing limit is only 1300kg but this is no real problem as I only intend to purchase a small 4 berth caravan with no more than 1200kg weight fully laden.

I have just joined the caravan and camping club and intend to do their two day towing course for beginners. As you will appreciate I am a complete novice in this area so any advice would be much appreciated

Kind Regards

Francis.

1.8 petrol may be a bit small on power when you get to the hills ,if you run with full car and van, just take your time and dont panik it comes to you in the end.

Check it out on www.whattowcar.com

It comes at 3 stars out of 5 - like most petrol engined towcars will struggle to start off on a hill and indeed will be pretty

hard pressed on gradients.

It is very similar to my Focus 1.8 petrol which I am looking to change as it is pretty poor pulling our new Bailey with a gross weight of 1150 kgs.

My sister and brother-in-law have a 2003 1.8 Avensis Estate with which they used to tow a very lightweight Avondale Perle caravan (less than 1000kgs MTPLM), and it struggled. Apparently its biggest problem was traction. It would wheelspin on a level and dry road surface when trying to set off.

I have only driven (and towed with) the diesel versions of the previous generation and the latest model, which were fine.
