We have ordered a new Hymer caravan at £19,000 but have only been offered £6,000 for our faultless 2005 Bessacarr 495SL. Is this fair?

John, unfortunately that is the way it is, just the same as the car trade.
What you have to remember is as soon as you buy a caravan, you lose 17.5% of the price to the tax man, after that the fastest and biggest depreciation is in the first 3 years, after that it slows down somewhat.

The time to negotiate is BEFORE you place an order - it's immaterial whether you negotiate discount off the new caravan or get an enhanced trade-in value, it's reducing the cost to change which is important.
If you've now placed the order, you're at the mercy of the salesman's charity, or otherwise.

John - I whole haertedly agree with Emmerson. Tell them you are not satisfied with their part exchange offer and then walk away. If they want your business they will come after you and make a revised offer. Alternatively keep your existing van and enjoy the money saved. If your van is so good why spend money for the sake of spending? I was thinking of changing my car but it has been faultless for the 4 years of ownership so I thought why spend when my car is going so well - fair enough it is a 1998 model but is in excellent condition and serves us well.
John as the VERY PROUD owner of a Bessacarr why would you want to downgrade anyway!!
