Trailer tent/pop up caravan - which to go for

Now that my caravan has gone to caravan heaven and finances are extremely tight I wondered whether or not to go for a trailer tent or pop up caravan. Has anyone got any experience of these? Really like the luxury of my caravan so its going to be hard for the next year until I save up for another one!

We had Conway TTs from 1992 to 2003, and have had a pop-top caravan since 2004.

TT advantages are towing, space, not having to make up beds. Disadvantages are set up/set down, rain, lack of storage space for bulky but light items whilst towing.

Caravan advantages are quick set up/set down, being able to overnight in a layby, better insulation for a longer season, better windows and ventilation. Disadvantages are making up beds, more wind resistance, have to use a pup tent for one daughter.

It's difficult to recommend one or the other for you as we are all different.

We started off with a tiny traior tent (and 2 toddler), graduated to a large TT then eventually to a folding caravan.

now with the juniors going their own ways and retirement and iffey backs set in we`ve progressed to a popup.

For just the 2 of us its ideal.

Easy to tow, easy to set up and all the luxuaries we had missed when under canvas.

Would I go back (even to a folding caravan)?.. no way, to us its pure bliss despite the need to make beds etc each night.

The shear bulk of a full blown van either for towing or storing just make it so right for our needs

Conway Cruiser folding camper , you can pick them up quite cheap on ebay , just sold mine last year , has more of the camping effect than a caravan and a lot easier to erect than a trailer tent

Good luck .... Harry

Never had a pop up caravan, but we did have a conway canterbury TT. Huge beast, excellent quality, big beds, slept us and 3 kids, loads of space. BUT it took hours to put up and take down. This was especially difficult as I am rather short, so couldn't reach some of the fixings.

We've never owned a trailer tent, but my daughter has.

It was a Combi Camp, and unlike alot of other trailer tents, you could literally put it up in five minutes.

It came with optional extras such as awning and camp kitchen with fridge. When set up it was a very spacious and comfortable unit.
