trauma boiler issues

Hi all

Well just got to my site and set up and found my water heater is inoperative on electric?

the red light on the main switch is not on so have checked the fuse in the switch (all ok) and the fuse in the control panel is also ok.

Any ideas where i can check next or is it mobile engineer time?

If the red light is not on you haven't got any volts going to the switch - unless the red light has failed or the switch is faulty. You may have a wire off at the input to the switch. Which switch are we talking about anyway. Is it the one that feeds only the heater or does it feed other stuff as well. Does the control panel fuse feed other stuff on the same circuit and do they still work or has everything failed.

The switch is the main power switch that is mounted on the side of my bed in my van

To the best of my knowledge all the switch does is the water heater element (buy cant guarantee thats all)

And the control panel fuse is only for water heater also

When you set up the van on site are you ABSOLUTELY certain the heater switch was OFF before you filled with water?

If it was ON, the unit has tripped and removing the mains power from the van (take the hook up plug out), run cold water through the heater to cool it down, and wait for 15 minutes for it to reset.

Then try again, making sure the heater is full before power is applied.

If you did all this right first time then it looks like the element may have failed and needs a new one.

The heater is a direct feed from the distribution box in the van. The red light on the switch simply indicates that power is available at the switch

yes was 100% in the off position

if it was a element fault would the switch still light up tho?

Yes it would as mains power is up to the switch.

so its souding like a power supply issue rather than a fault with the boiler then

can you run on gas to get you by.

lol yes i can but as im working on site for the next 6 months thats a lot of gas used

The only thing to do now is with a multimeter, check to see if you actually do have mains at the switch, it may be the light has blown.

If you have power at the switch, then it is the heater at fault and needs changing

righto chaps

had a mobile caravan engineer come out to look at the heater (left spur marks on my ground sheet in the process and at least dick turpin wore a mask when he robbed you!!!!!!) and it appears to be the element at fault

so firstly when can i get a new one and secondly how do i fit it?? i just need a diagram to see how it fits together

So, what I advised you in March was right then,,lol,you need a new element.

in my defence what threw me was the fact the power switch didnt light up lol

so any recommendations where to buy the element from?

Also how long does a element last?

or would it be ok to just use the heater on gas from now on with no ill effects as

Yes the unit can be used simply as a gas powered boiler with no ill effects.

I would personally isolate the mains feed. That's probably going over the top but I don't like leaving live redundant mains supplies in place.
