hi i wonder if anyone has changed the element on the above in a Sprite Alpine 4 2010 model. we recently went on our first trip of the year and unfortunately when we hooked up to mains i inadvertently switched on the water heater whilst not having any water in the tank. Yeah i know pretty slack you can guess the outcome. I would be grateful for any advice cheer jwp

Is there a thermal cutout button that you might be able to reset?

Yes! I had to change mine when I was in Spain over the winter last year. I got a company to send me the element by post. As others have said, it should be possible to get the heater to reset itself once it cools down, which it will do by the time it's filled with cold water. However, it's my belief that you can do so a limited number of times before it burns out. If it comes to changing the element it's comparatively easy. First find out what wattage yours is. Some of the fibre board covering will have to be cut away. With the boiler empty, disconnect the wiring, undo the two small nuts at the end of the element, and the element will withdraw from the boiler case. If the boiler is close to fittings or walls, the element will need to be manoeuvred a bit to withdraw it. Use a new gasket when refitting.
I wouldn't cut the cardboard maybe just bend it out of the way. If you look on the label On top it will be a 400w or a 850w most likely in a 2010 it will be a 850w. Comes in the packet with four new nuts and a new o ring gasket. It's wee buns to fit just need a small socket set with a 5.5mm iirc for the stat nuts. Just look at the new one and decide if you will have enough room to extract it. Sometimes I have to move the water heater but this requires disconnecting the gas and the flu.
