Hi there .Has anyone travelled to Italy via the Imst/ Landeck/Nauders/Merano/S38/S40 route. It looks very interesting but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. If it is too hard I will have to go via the Brenner pass. Nigel
Done the bit over the Fern Pass to Imst which is fine if you have a well matched outfit. I have read of others who have used the route you are asking about and from what they say it is perfectly do-able. One of the things I tend to do when looking at routes which are slightly out of the ordinary is to follow them on Google Earth as you get a pretty good impression of what the roads are like. Often there are also photos of the route. Having said that the Brenner Pass is a superb road with lovely views and not that expensive in terms of tolls.
I have done this journey in the oposite direction twice. It is no problem that way but there are some steep sections and it would depend on your outfit. I personally would not worry over much if I was going that way and it will save you getting the Austrian vignette and the Brenner toll.
2007, Lake Garda to Tesimo (116m 4hrs) - overnight at Camping Park Arquin (C/Cheque) - then Reschen Pass and Fern Pass to Plansee (138m 6hrs) to see Neuschwanstein Castle. With a wellmatched outfit (and good brakes!) it's a nice tow. Enjoy!!
