:cheer: Thursday AM, Lady G and I will start our first leg of our three site tour of the Old Gt North Road, Now the A1, but originally the Roman road from Londinium up to The Scottish Boarders.

Let us hope for better weather. We are going to Harrogate first, then on to Berwick on Tweed, into Scotland for a day visit, then chase our tails down to Whitby area.

17 days of bliss.

Check out some old maps - you'll find that both the "Great North Road" and the A1 have moved in places, and the modern A1/A1(M) bypasses almost everywhere - but with good detective work the old road still exists and can be found.
On a pedantic note, the Centurions would have used Ermine Street, aka the "Old North Road", which used a different route to the "Great North Road" most of the way.

Hi all,

Apologies for delay in replying only we went away again to Poynton.

We actually stayed on Haven sites, not everybody's cup of tea but very cheap for two oldies.

l did some research on A1 and yes, it has moved away from the original old North Road. We actually have the A1 (M) running alongside Stevenage, but l remember when the North Road ran through the town.
There was so much to see and do on our trip but well worth it.

Latest trip to appear in appropriate category in next few days. Waiting for resurrection of defunct PC.

Sir Brian of Stevenage.

Brian, there is a great book called "The great North Road, Then And Now" written by Chris Cooper. Lots of pictures, and his own experiences from driving the road.
£14.95 but worth every penny.(may be cheaper on Amazon)
