Trim Strip end caps. How do you get them off?

1st post... be gentle with me! I have read through all the 41 pages but could not see this one.

Got an old van, huge mortgage and two kids therefore no money to get a professional to do things like re-bed the mastic sealant in the trim strips and awning rails which is showing its age. Want to do this myself before a major problem occurs.

Thought I would start on the easy bits like the rear trim strip.

Anyway, having bought all the bits I thought I would need, you know, like new screws, mastic strip, Silkoflex etc when I noticed the end caps appeared to be riveted in place. Certainly the beading appears to be held in place by the rivets.

So my question is:

Are the trim strips normally riveted to the bodywork and will I need to drill them out? Or do I just pop the beading out and remove all the screws underneath and pull it off leaving the beading sort of flopping about in the wind?

Anybody with some experience want to point me in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Wishlist

The last time that I did this was on a Bailey. I removed the rubber insert strip that is pressed into the trim, and then removed the fixing screws. With a bit of gentle easing it then just came away. I haven't heard of these strips being riveted onto the actual body, but I guess it is possible.

If I were you I'd remove the screws and see what happens. You'll probably find that it'll then come away. The mastic can have quite an adhesion though so don't be fooled into thinking that it's still attached by other means. You'll have to play it by ear really. Try to use a none metallic tool to do any prising though, or damage to the paint and/or bodywork can easily occur.

Thanks Mick. Just wanted a little re assurance before I dived in.

Many thanks.

Off I go then at the weekend! Most of the jobs that seemed daunting to start with turned out to be quite simple so far! Fingers crossed!
