Trophy Platnum 447 Query

This is my first post about my first caravan so forgive me if my questions seem simple.

I have just bought a Trophy Platnum 447 4 berth for a very small sum, which needs a bit of work. I need some new tyres on it as the owner has put car tyes on, of which the sidewall has collapsed. Which caravan tyres are the best to replace these with, and should I invest in these tryon belts which go inside the tyre or settle with the pink gunk(!)?

cheers

Phil,

Nothing inherently wrong with car tyres on a caravan, the only requirement is that you fit suitable tyres.

Hopefully the tyres that were fitted will be the correct size - check with your documentation - and then probably the most important requirement is to get a tyre with a sufficient "Load Index" for your caravan.

For example, if your caravan has a maximum allowable weight of 1000 kg - add 10% for safety and then divide by 2 - each tyre needs to support a minimum of 550 kg (1100 kg for the axle) - and a tyre with a load index of 88 is required.

If you look on http://www.blackcircles.com/general/sidewall you'll see a table of load index and kg for car tyres.

Or http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_tyres.htm has a listing more orientated towards commercial tyres - and note that this web-site shows the axle load and not the individual tyre load.
