Troutbeck Head

I don't usually post reviews about caravan sites because people's needs and expectations differ, so this is not a review but something to start a discussion.

We've just come back from the CAMC site at Troutbeck Head. A very nice place in our opinion. About 149 pitches...big pitches...spread over a large area. But this is the curious thing. We reckon less than 20% were occupied.

We expected it to be busy. The area was but not this site. Mind you there are plenty of other sites in the same area.

Is it normally like this and then gets packed when the English schools start summer break?

Must be good for a “Highlander” to say so👍

CAMC seem to have revamped a lot of their sites over the last five years.
Carnon Downs Cornwall was immaculate last two weeks. Full range from grass with EHU to full blown massive FSPs including own picnic tables.. Child friendly.
On site small Bar and basic takeaways. Outside catering vans attend most nights with varied cuisine.
Fully occupied but no issues
No longer cheap. £41 per night FSP .Well worth it .But CLs are still our favourite

We stayed at Troutbeck some years ago. Its location was convenient for us when visiting Haweswater and climbing up to High Street. Whilst it was nicely maintained there was far too much gravel and hard surface with minimal grass between the pitches. It served its purpose as far as we were concerned.

Isn't hard surfacing pretty much a pre-requisite in areas with high rainfall, eg Lake District and Wales

Carnon Downs had generous grass areas between pitches. Most pitches were on gravel

Wow, we stayed there back in 2016, the first week of the Leicestershire school summer holidays (so a week before most other places) and it was busy then. A nice site from memory with a stream running through it.

We were there on 7th June for 4 nights & thought it would be a lot busier than it was.
It was good though, had a right laugh at my mate setting his brand new caravan up after seeing sense & selling his motorhome. He was cursing trying to get it level ( he’s very particular so it had to be DEAD level) & once it was level he realised it was **** eyed on the pitch so he had to start again.
I thought my pants would never dry! 😂😂😂

My brother was the same 6 weeks ago, spot on level, by the worktop. Then the shower wouldn't drain,

I just love people watching. Of course you forget they're watching you too 🙂
I reckon there’d have been a few people creased up at me & my Mrs putting our new (to us) Isabella poled awning up at Glen Nevis in May.
Took about 2 hours & many watchings of the Isabella guy doing it solo in 25 minutes on You Tube.
I’m surprised I never got banned from the site for the use of foul language. 😂

After decades I still haven’t the best place for the spirit level
I use the same place for the spirit level, every time, even put an Arrow mark on the spirit level, and instead of Jimmy's glass I have a green and white metal tin, 330ml. 🤩
