I write to make you aware of a potential disaster concerning this regulator fitted to my new Elddis Odyssey 544 caravan.
On setting up the caravan on the first stop of my holiday in August this year I opened the front locker and turned on the gas. After a while I noticed a smell of gas. After some time and by using a washing up liquid solution as a leak test I eventually traced the leak to the small yellow button on the left side of the regulator.
I cannot stress how dangerous this was and how lucky I was as prior to smelling the gas and after turning the gas on I used a cordless drill to operate the corner steadies. I do not want to think of what might have happened if I had operated the drill in proximity of the escaping gas.
There was no literature concerning the regulator with the caravan documents therefore I had no option but to purchase and fit a replacement purchased from a local dealer.
So far so good but can you imagine my concern when on reading the literature I discovered that the leak would appear to be designed in as a Pressure Relief Valve. Luckily I have a sense of smell or this leak would have gone undetected with possible fatal results.
I fail to see how this can be acceptable surely if there is a malfunction the device should be able to shut down the gas and not simply vent gas to the atmosphere.
I really am concerned that this is a disaster waiting to happen and feel as a matter of urgency that these circumstances be broadcast as widely as possible.
