Truma Hose froze up this morning on site

Hi folks,

Woke up this morning, and like many others we had a frozen hose, direct from tap to the truma water inlet,

I poured some hot water from a kettle on the hose to defrost but this didn’t help

Is there any tips to stop hoses freezing up over night, which lays coiled up alongside the caravan.

Also just out of curiosity, if no water is being supplied (or trickling through) due to frost and the pump is on when someone turns on the tap, can it burn out the pump?

For submersible pumps, the answer is yes. But I have known them to run for at least half an hour without a lasting problem.

Well Saxo, your getting a good learning curve. I mentioned earlier on another thread that using the Aqua roll I have insulated the hose with 22 mm lagging . Then using an old Anorak put that around the aqua roll and feed the water pipe from the aqua roll to the van through a sleeve.
Another problem of using a tap to van water supply is in frosty/frezzing conditions, the pipe frezzes and can conduct that frozen water into the caravan for a short distance.

I certainly am mate, this has been such a learning curve, which is why I‘m asking so many questions

Yeh woke up and didn’t realise the frost was on the way, but that’s a great idea though and will def use it.

We are so much enjoying it though, Sooooo much better than camping

If you are going to continue using the tap to van connection. Then buy the 22mm lengths of lagging from Wickes / B and Q. But better to use the aqua roll and the anorack. The top 1/2 inch of water frezzes but leaves the rest liquid. Remember to break the ice otherwise you get an airlock.

Without wishing to reopen the debate on using hose/tap or Aquaroll/float methods for water supply I’d see the latter has the advantage for winter caravanning.

I have tried to find a photo of us in Montreuil sir Mer in France in Feb 2013 van was 2 weeks old and the snow was 2 feet deep stayed there for a month. Luckily the water supply was well lagged. . Enjoy.

When we bought the pipe insulation from, I think, B&Q it was a lot cheaper than £1.30 a metre, but this was about 2 years ago. Our Whale hose is about 8m long.

After that we never had a problem with the water hose freezing, but did have issues with the waste pipe freezing due to residue water in it. On another occasion we had the wastemaster contents freeze solid. Took ages to defrost. After that, last thing at night we would empty the wastemaster.

Just to add regarding your concern about pump burning out. On our caravan if after a couple of minutes the pump is still running it automatically clicks off. Not sure if similar applies to your caravan as we have the Whale system, but there should be a mention in the owner's manual if it does this.

Please be aware the damage to a submersible pump when running dry is accumulative. It should be avoided if at all possible.

On the two or three times we have had a freeze-up it was either the supply tap or the white float tube between the hose and the barrel body. A sprinkling with hot water freed it up in seconds. The blue hose is easily flexed and once the ends are clear with water pressure coming at it just flex the hose along its length and water will flow very soon after!

If you google ‘aquaroll winter jacket’ then several options are shown from about £20. although as above an anorak from a charity shop with the hose fed through a sleeve performs the same function less neatly!

We thought the same and great if it does not rain otherwise you will never need to fill up the aquaroll.
