Tunit units - advice please

Could I please ask for you advice on a Tunit diesel chip.

I have a Fiat Ulysse 2.0 JTD 04 plate - great old bus, but at only 109 bhp it lacks a little on the hills and long motorway drags. The figures quoted by the company say that the bhp will improve by 20 and the torque will also be improved, which sounds great.

Before I part with my cash, £400 odd, can anyone tell me if it will improve the towing performance of the car and also will have any effect on fuel consumption?

Thanks in anticipation. Sean

Hi Sean

Hundreds of us Sorento owners have bought the Powerbox system from Taff at Griffin Motor Tuning with excellent results.

The figure you quote seems very expensive.

May I suggest before you part with your hard earned cash you have a word with Taff.

Cheers

Hi g

Curious to know how you can improve the BHP of a car by 18% or so without increasing fuel consumption or even reducing it. Seldom do you get something for nothing in this life. Wouldn't the manufacturer apply the same mapping at the production stage were it not detrimental to either fuel consumption, engine wear or emissions?

Chrisbee, Any tuning company would try to tell you that the manufacturers have to make there cars safe for all markets and all grades of fuel,so there is plenty of room for improvement.

I would add myself that no two cars are mechanically the same,if you put two cars on a rolling road with a claimed 100bhp,one might show 95 ad the other 105,and all the time they are using identical maps, but the same map cannot be perfect for both cars.

So its a compromise.

If you have a car remapped, that map will be perfect for your car,and yes a tunning [in a diesels case] will then try to use some of the excess of air to give it more fuel and more power, but you only use more fuel if you keep your foot to the floorboards.Something you really will not have to do as often in a remapped car, as you did in the non remapped car.So your mpg could be better,as you don't use as much throttle as before.

I've just had a Tunit fitted to my 1999 Volvo V70, this has the Audi 2.5 litre engine fitted . The Car has done 185k , I had a K & N air filter fitted at the same time.

The performance of the car in mid and top range is transformed.

Tunit offer a fit and try, and if you don't like it we'll take it off option before you pay. They also do 6 months free credit.

I think that, like every thing else if you drive as you did before fitment you should get better mpg. I am getting about the same, but as I said car is transformed, best bit of kit I've ever bought.

I of course have no association with tunit at all.

If you change the performance of your car from that stated on the registration documentation do you have to tell your insurance company and DVLA? If not, would the insurance company refuse to pay out in the event of an accident? They use every excuse they can to not pay out.

Several other things to be cosidered.

can your gearbox cope with the increased torque.

Is the the braking system capable suitable for the upgrade

Does suspension require modification

easy to increase the power , but their are other anciluaries to consider. personally i would purchase a vehicle suitable for the purpose, not look to adapt a vehicle.

Have to say John, considering the mileage of your Volvo, and if the major parts are original [turbo]being the main worry with that sort of mileage. You are risking it slightly to say the least.

In 2001 I bought a BMW 330d auto and had the engine remapped by Superchips. The performance increase was phenomenal and I didn't notice any problems with consuption.

I only had the car for a year before it was stolen, but shortly before it went I had started to notice a bit of a loud clunk from what felt like the gearbox or drive-shaft (pure guesswork here). Now I've no idea if this was down to damage caused by the increased bhp/ torque or if it was just a loose screw. I know the gearboxes that are used these days are built to handle a certain amount of torque and so could be damaged if too much. I suppose one could check if your gearbox is in fact installed in other more powerful models. I don't think the one in my 330d was installed in any more powerful cars as it had more power than the 330i petrol for a start.

As for the insurance company, this just makes the thing a joke. You can virtually guarantee that your insurance will double. You can't get any quote online anywhere that I know of and so you will have to go to a specialist insurer (big bucks)

Hi Sean,I bought a Tunnit chip for my previous car a range rover 2.5 diesel.I went to the headquarters in Chorley to have it fitted. The guy took a few attempts to fit it,it seemed to beok.I went back to Blackpool hitched up the van and drove home.En route I only managed to get 17.5 mpg towing, prior to chip being fitted i was getting 21.3mpg !

Once we got home I called them and they advised me to take it to one of there approved installers in Kirkcaldy.Went there, guy took a look at it and noticed immediatly that it had been fitted incorrectly ! it was then properly fitted and we went for a test drive, it was running ok but not upto the power that was meant to be there.Anyway end result was I decided to have it removed and have the money refunded. It took them five weeks to do so.

In the end I sold it on and purchased a newer 4x4 car.Take the advice of some of the other go elsewhere !

cheers

I decided not to go for the Tunit unit. I went with AngelTuning instead and had the engine remapped, the service was excellent. Initial impressions are that the car is much livelier. I am towing up to Losehill (Castleton Derbyshire) tomorrow so I will see how it goes.

Once again thanks for all the advice
