At the moment we have a Sterling Eccles Jewel but thinking to change to a large Swift twin axle island bed layout. We usually spend 3-4 weeks on the continent each year has anyone any opinion on how these are viewed over there. Also anyone got one of these vans and what do you think of them.

Never had a problem with our T/A in france, although some of the municipal sites may not accept you as their pitches are designed for tents and small vans and motorhomes. We use the sites in the ASCI and Campingcheque books and found them to be the best value for money.Enjoy your new van.

Hi We have twin axle Elddis Crusader and over 5 years travelling here in Europe have never had any trouble getting on a site or on the roads. Would recommend one every time.

The issue with twin axels in France is that many sites, particularly municipals, prohibit entry in order to deter itinerants from using the site. Often they will disregard the rule for tourists but there are so many sites to choose from, owning a TA should not be an issue. After 5 touble free years, we moved back to a single axel because designs had improved sufficiently to give us what we wanted in a lighter van.

We have been taking our touring holidays in France with a twin axle since 2000. We have had no problems travelling or with sites. You can generally get an idea of average pitch sizes from brochures / web sites and, if travelling in high season (July / august) it would be best to book and let the site know your caravan size so that they can reserve you a pitch to suit. We usually travel there 2 or 3 times a year and find that the pitch sizes can be much larger than you have in the uk. As has been said, the only restrictions you may have are at the municial sites however we have never needed to use one. We have children and tend to go for sites with a pool and other facilities for them.
