Tyre advice

Hi there

As I was getting our caravan ready over the weekend for our first outing over easter, I noticed slight cracking to the walls of both tyres. Being the cautious and careful type I wish to change these before going away.

Can anyone give advice as to what would be a good choice of tyre. Cost isn't an issue, I would rather have the best quality available.

My Caravan is a Bailey Ranger 470/4 2004 model with a MIRO of 972 and a M.T.P.L.M of 1172.

The current tyres are Trailermaxx as fitted standard by Bailey.

info from the tyre wall is:

185/65/14 90N MAX LOAD 600KG

Can I use good quality car tyres... say michelin?

Many thanks in advance

Andrew

Andy, you will probably need van tyres because of the weight requirement. Why not talk to your local tyre dealer. You can also get tyres via teh internet, but check on the weight limit.

Virtually all caravans are fitted with commercial type tyres with 6 or even 8 ply walls. This is because of the weight factor. Look at the ply rating on your tyres and ask a dealership what choices they can offer. Your tyres have a max loading of 600 kg each which is only slightly above your MTPLM, so you may wish to get tyres with a higher rating to give a better safety factor, however, do not go too high or the ride will suffer.

Car tyres are not suitable for a caravan. I guess that you will pay around

With an MTPLM of 1172kg, each tyre will be carrying half of that, i.e. 586kg. This is equivalent to a '90' load rating which is approved for up to 600kg. You will therefore need a tyre with at least a '90' load rating, which is what you've got at the moment (185/65/14 90N).

You are free to buy any make of tyre as long as it has a suitable load index, is the correct rolling diameter and suitable to fit your wheel and wheel arch clearances.

I don't seem to be able to find your particular tyre but the same size in a 6ply tyre with a 93 index seems common enough and gives you a comfortable load margin over the weight of your van
