TYre Pressures

Hi, can anyone please help! I have recently bought my first caravan, a 2009 Adria Altea 542DK. As this did not come with a spare wheel, I purchased a spare wheel and went to get a tyre fitted by a garage used by my local caravan dealer. On the side of the caravan it says that the tyre pressure should be 65psi, but the guy at the garage told me that he had never inflated a tyre that high and that 42 to 45psi was the correct pressure. Can anyone please advise what the correct pressure should be.

Thanks

Andy

Andy,

If Adria have stated 65psi on the side of the caravan they have stated this pressure for a reason. Does your handbook confirm this pressure? I would give your Adria dealer a phonecall to be certain.

The new tyre will probably have a maximum pressure marked on the sidewall. I'd check that this is 65psi or more then use the Adria recommended pressure.

Hi, I have a 1500kg Geist van, my tyre pressure is 60 psi, any less and the unit rocks all over the road, stick with manufactures recommended pressure!

Hello Andy,

On the whole single axle tyre pressures are substantially higher than most cars, and the tyres should be either specific caravan tyres or commercial 8 ply rated tyres. These can normally with stand higher pressures.

As for actual pressure 65psi does seem higher than most, and my suspicions are raised for the following reasons;

Firstly it is unusual for manufactures to put the tyre pressures on the side of the vehicle (though it is a good idea to have the information available where you need it).

Secondly Adria are a continental manufacturer and are far more likely to publish the figure in Bar or Kps not PSI. So I wonder if this has been added by a previous owner, who may have used the wrong pressure.

I think it would be wise to either check the specification and pressure in the owners hand book for the caravan, or check with Adria direct.

John L.,

I had 3 Bailey Senators and my present 2007 Swift Conqueror all with the recomended tyre pressure, plus other information, on a metal plate next to door on outside of caravan.

Don't know if this is unique to Bailey and Swift Group.

However 2 months ago when all 4 Matador tyres on my Conqueror were found to have large cracks on the side walls, discovered while i was cleaning the caravan at home, my dealer Golden Castle Caravans immediatly arranged to have them replaced at my local tyre dealers with a different make of tyre under warranty.A whole batch of Matador tyres had failed on different makes of caravans. A company called Tyreline who supply tyres to the caravan industry and handled the replacement, highly efficiently, supplied the new tyres to my local A.T.S. centre within 48 hours. The replacement tyres were the same size, loading and ply as the origonals.

A.T.S. suggested the tyre pressures should be 4 to 5 psi more than stated on the caravan. My dealer and Swift confirmed the figure on the side of the caravan was correct.

It just goes to show how caravanners can end up with incorrect tyre pressures.

Firstly re the Adria's tyre pressuer, did you not receive a handbook with the van?

Re van tyres I have found normal tyre outlets quite uninformed about the technical specs and load ratings. My Bailey came with Trailermax and when they were changed this March my dealer had Matador fitted. Howver when I looked at the tyre sidewall info they had the correct load rating but were less plys than Bailey recommended. So I contacted Matador and their response was that they don't recommend any of their tyres for caravans given the bad press that can arise if tyres blow, and the fact that vans spend so long static. So I contacted my dealer and they told me that they had fitted Matador as replacements for a longish while and not been informed of any problems. Howver they were very good and arranged for the Matadors to be taken off and Trailermax put on, all at no cost difference.
