Tyre wear question?

Our tyre pressure is 2.4 bar or 36 psi. Wear on near side rear tyres is as follows; Inner 4.1, Mid 2.7, Outer 3.9. Offside rear tyre; Inner 3.6, Mid 2.4, Outer 3.7. tyres have done approximately 14500 miles. Front tyres are all above 5mm across the tread and they have done just over 14000 miles. Rear ones are a budget brand and front are Continental.

What would cause the tyre to wear more in the middle than on the inner and outside when it is at the correct pressure? Pressure is checked regularly and is generally at 2.4bar all round. Thanks.

Firstly, 45,000 miles is pretty good for most drivers. I did have this a long time ago on a Cortina. Running almost exclusively with no load the car was light at the rear, and wore the centres.
Other reasons which may not apply to you are rim too narrow for the tyre profile, or just the budget brand wearing unevenly.
From now on I suggest you rotate the tyres at 10,000km. Perhaps you don't want the budget brand at the front. At least switch them left to right (if they are not one-directional) and get a bit more out of them.

45,000 miles is excellent. But high wear in the middle is an indication of too high a pressure.

When did you have a full four wheel alignment. I had a Mondeo where the tears tended to scrub as they were out of alignment. Since then I have my cars done annually.

It is the rear tyres and alignment was checked Monday. Only rear tyres with more wear in middle

The manufacturers' recommended tyre pressures take a number of factors into account, besides weight load - it's quite possible that any one car can have a non-average usage pattern which could be driver & front passenger only most of the time, steady cruising speeds on motorways a lot of the time.

If you want to wear the tyres more on their edges, "drive it like you stole it"

I live in RMK, Rural Milton Keynes, and with all our roundabouts, about 280 of them, the side of the tyres wear down a lot, but center wear points to over inflation , to me.

I agree about over inflation however the tyres are at 2.4 bar so slightly underinflated as 36psi is actually 2.48 bar.

Tyre wear on the middle is normally too high a pressure, although I have tended to leave the car at towing level and not had a problem. The only thing I can think of if you have this problem and you have set the correct pressure is the gauge, but do not know if the same one has been used throughout.
