Tyre wear

Hi all, has anyone had experience of tyres wearing at the outside edges? I have just returned from a trip to spain, having left with decent tyres and found the tyres are shot with the outside edges being worn almost to the canvas. They have covered about 9-10 thousand miles since the caravan was new in 2007.I haven't been involved in any incident to have caused mis alignment of the wheels, if this possible and the wheel bearings are ok. Obviously they are being replaced. Any ideas?

Have a look at this web link. http://www.procarcare.com/includes/content/resourcecenter/encyclopedia/ch25/25readtirewear.html

Could be a myriad of causes but start with the simplest first.

How much clearance have you got between the tyre and the wheelarch? Several years ago, I inadvertently hit a kerb which bent the shock absorber mounting bracket. This damage was not immediately visible but caused the bracket to scrape rubber off the inside sidewall of the tyre. I know the damage that you are referring to is on the outside but maybe something inside the wheelarch is very close to the tyre and touching it at times.

....... this type of damage can occur on twin axle caravans if you repeatedly make sharp turns or U turns.

You do not say if it is a twin axle.

Thanks for that gafferbill, mine's a single axle, but I have used the motor mover to spin it around a few times, it's on greass at the moment but I might just put it back on the drive and do a few maneuvers to actually see what happens.
