tyres again. advice please

Hi all,
I am relatively new to caravans, but not to towing.
Our lunar t/a has 155/80r13 tyres fitted with a load rating of 78
i am looking to replace these with "c" rated tyres.
can i fit 175/80r13 c instead or will the arches not be wide enough
please help

hi,
It depends on the arches and how much room there is now with the 155 tyres,
sorry I cannot be more specific as I dont know the model you have very well, all I can say is I did exactly the same mod on our bailey exept it had 165/80x13. the wider tyres do make a big difference and fit "just nice" with millimetres to spare just enough to get the milenco weelclamp on "you can just make it out on the avatar picture.

Going from 155's to 175's is quite a big jump without changing to wider wheel rims as well. Bear in mind that both the tyres and the suspension deflect sideways under load so you need adequate clearance not only on the outside but also on the inside tyre wall.

You may have problems fitting a wheel clamp onto the tyre. Not sure of the impact on a mover or the fitting of a mover with different size tyre. I would stick with the recommended size as putting on different sizes is regarded as a modification and may affect your insurance.

If you as stated change to 175/80 tyres, you will increase the rolling diameter by 16mm, therefore if you have a mover you will also need to adjust the gap between the rollers and tyre. As in the case of having a powrtouch mover, it is requred to have a 20mm gap, by changing the tyres to 175/80 this gap is reduced to 4mm.

…..…why do you feel the need to change the tyre size?

Twin axle caravan tyres are doing half the work of tyres fitted to single axle caravans for a given weight.
They normally are specified with tyres of a lower rating but they are more than adequate often with a greater safety margin as regards loading.

I would check that you have the correct specification tyres fitted and replace with the same size.
