Has anyone installed underfloor heating or something similar, Reason being is that we've got a Bailey Ranger with heating in the front half with blow heaters but because of the layout you don't get any heat in the rear area at night when the kids are asleep and the door is shut?

Hello Rob,

As far as I know there is no underfloor heating solution for caravans at the moment. About 15 years ago, a company did produce an electrically heated mat that was suggested for caravans, but testing evidence found it to produce hot spots, and if it got covered with anything like a blanket or sleeping bag falling off a bed, it actually started to de-nature the backing material and discolour the top.

However I see no reason why a liquid based system similar to those used in homes might work. The floor would have to be re-engineered to accommodate the pipes, and I say liquid as distinct from water, as winter storage would be a problem without some form of antifreeze.

This might work for anyone with an ALDE water based heating system.

Hi, A friend of mine has a Geist with factory fitted underfloor heating and to be honest unless he removes the removable carpet you don't appear to get any benefit, he say's he wouldn't bother again, i assume you have a Truma blown air system fitted to your van, if correctly adjusted it should be more than adequate.

We've got a Truma blown air system but our Ranger 540/6 there isn't any vents down the back, and due to the layout there isn't an easy way of getting the ducting down to the back either, unless it's routed outside underneath the floor?

Yes, a carpet rather defeats the object of underfloor heating.
Rob,

A lot of caravan manufacturers position some of the ducting under the floor to bridge entrance doors etc.

Nothing wrong with doing this but make sure you insulate the pipes enough. The standard insulation contained within the waterproof exterior pipe is next to useless.

I fitted an underfloor heating mat to my caravan last winter and it has been extremely good.

I can't remember the make now - it was bought from eBay. I fitted underlay, then fitted the heating mat on top of that, then covered it with a 2.5mm thick layer of plywood and then fitted the carpet on top of that.

The system works with a simple thermostat and the total cost of the installation was somewhere in the region of

Are you saying that a blown air vent is not fitted at the rear of your Ranger or that there is one and it is not effective.

I fitted blown air heating to a previous 'van so extending the system is not an insurmountable problem. Any ducting under the 'van must be insulated (either the Carver/Truma black insulated ducting or by using bubble wrap or similar secured by duct tape on standard ducting.

My van had a std gas fire, and I added blown air heating, so its very easy to add extra ducting and outlets to yours.

The hardest part is drilling holes in the floor and walls of your van! measure 4000 times, cut once lol.
