Snap, we found one of these in a awning bag , made of black rubber, it was part of a large full size awning that we never assembled,we have always used porch awnings, now we are into the lighter weight oneswith the carbon flexy poles.

Going with what Royston says cud it be some think that hold the poles in plays in the centre of the awning to make roof bit.
