we have recently purchased a 95 Elddis typhoon, we are not sure if we are missing parts!!

we tonight tried to connect upto the house mains to test out all the electrics etc....we have a reel of cable with a connecter... also a kind of extension lead v snall...then the cable from caravan.....it seems to be a mixture of 2 pin plugs and 3 pin...no way of connecting to the house.... i have pics if this helps!!

its all v confusing...also some wires seem to be exposed...is this safe.....

can anyone explain how to check the electrics at home and in fact how you connect on a site

thanks in advance

Under no circumstances should you connect anything with exposed wires to the mains. If you are that unsure of what to do, please, please call an electrician, before you kill yourself.

Hi Carol.

If you are unsure if the wires are exposed or not, I would say that and as Steve has said leave well alone and get a qualified electrician to sought your problem out. Electricity takes no prisoners!!

Yes , i do realise the importance now...we are going to phone the dealer tommorow and ask him to sort things for us.

its so dissapointing though, we were under the impression we could just set off and enjoy our new found caravanning status!!

Hi carol,

If you brought your van from a dealer I would have thought he should have shown you all the workings of your van including the process of connecting the electrics etc.

Do not be put off by this setback, we all have to learn the various workings of our vans. I hope you get sorted and enjoy your future trips away in your van.

Regards.

buy on of these from your caravan dealer to plug the caravan lead in to or if you are confident replace the blue plug that plugs into the site electrics with a 3 pin domestic plug

Hi Carol,

What you should have is an orange cable with big blue connectors on the end. One end of the cable plugs into a blue socket in the side of the caravan - this socket is usually inside the battery hatch. The other end plugs into the electric points on caravan sites.

If you want to connect up at home you then need an adaptor cable which has the blue socket on one end & a three pin house plug on the other.

Hope this helps.

It sounds as if the previous owner has left the french adaptor lead(short lead with a 2 pin plug on one end & the blue ehu conector on the other) the short lead with a uk 3 pin plug at one end & a blue ehu connector on the other is to connect to the mains via a 13amp socket. you may also have 2nd a short lead with a 2 pin plug on it This may be a reversed polarity connector for use on french sites that have reversed polarity mains connection posts. So Please check these 2 pin short leads carefully

Hi Carol, just wondering if you've any contact details for the previous owner? If the previous poster (a different Tony!) is right with their assumption, my guess is they were very keen caravanners and I'm sure they would be delighted to speak to the owners of their previous pride & joy! If your caravan in CRIS registered you should get details from them.

You need a 3 core supply to the van, the most important core of the cable is the green/yellow earth, it could save your life.

If in any doubt do not use and get it looked at by a qualified electrician.

i would really like to let the previous owners know that their caravan has gone to good owners..but the dealer kept the cris paperwork and said he would fill it in etc so dont know how to find them.
