Using Mobile Phones

A woman has been jailed for causing the death of a cyclist whilst using her mobile phone when driving. Apparantly she was also exceeding the speed limit in the area. However the cyclist went through a red light - although I can sympathise with the family of the cyclist and do not condone the use of mobile phones whilst driving, was not the cyclist part to blame for the accident? I have yet to see or hear any reference to him being partially at fault for the accident.

My thoughts exactly when I heard it, although it doesn't absolve her of blame, she would probably have hit him anyway due to the speed factor even if not texting.

Recently there was a programme on TV where the police were monitoring traffic lights in London. Despite there being about a dozen of them in Hi Viz vests and police cars they still nabbed a lot of cyclists for ignoring the lights. The police weren't even hiding.

Why is it that some cyclists go into der der mode thinking traffic regulations don't apply to them?

0nly this morning a cyclist in front of me totally ignored the red light. A favourite though is if they are on red ride up onto the pavement and scatter the pedestrians then the other side of the lights go back onto the road.

Would she have hit him if he had not gone through the red light even though she was speeding? The $64000 question. Apparantley she had already received three speeding fines prior to this accident. I thought that there was a rule of three speeding offences and you are banned off the road for a while.

I believe I did read somewhere (sorry, can't remember where) that the fact of the cyclist going through a red light was taken into account, and thus the woman received a lighter sentence.
