variable kerbweights?

According to my Ford galaxy handbook, kerbweight is 1724-2003kg for the tdi 130 manual. Calculating a max weight for a caravan to tow (allowing for 85%) suggests anything between 1465kg and 1702kg. What would the legal stance be here?

Also has anyone successfully towed any twin axle vans with one of these? - I like the idea of the extra stability, but haven't been able to find many vans that would comply with the lower of the two limits above.

Thanks in advance!

Your V5C Vehicle Registration Certificate should give you all the information that you need:

The maximum legally permissible towload will be found under Section 4, Vehicle Details, Item O.1 (Technical permissible maximum towable mass of the trailer, braked (kg))

Kerbweight is under Item G (Mass in service) in the same section.

Thanks Lutz, unfortunately, my V5C seems to omit that information. I have however found from the VIN plate that the car has a Gross vehicle weight of 2510kg and Gross Train weight of 4000kg. I guess that I need to put my car on a weighbridge to find out how much load capacity is available to me up to these absolute maximum figures. Regards.

If the max. gross vehicle weight is 2510kg and the max. gross train weight 4000kg, then the maximum permissible towload will probably be 1490kg. (Ford models usually have a max. gross train weight which is the sum of the towload and the GVW)

Am I incorrect, then, in thinking that you could theoretically tow a van of up to 2000kg if the Actual laden weight of the car did not exceed 200kg (not that you would want to in practice).

Otherwise how do Ford claim such a figure for the maximum towing capacity of the Galaxy?

Yes, there is also an absolute towload limit which may be less than gross train weight minus the actual weight of the car. You should find this limit in the handbook, too.
