VAT on caravan

We have just ordered a new Elddis Cyclone and as I am self employed and use the caravan for a large percentage of the time for matters related to work I wondered if I could claim the VAT back.

Michael, the only person who can answer this is the VAT man.

However, I would very much doubt if you can, as the van is not strictly a "tool of your trade", unlike, for example, a car used as a taxi.

Many years ago I used my van to attend agricultural shows my accountant advised that I could claim all of the vat back less the share I used for private use If I recall it worked out about 50/50 But remember when you come to sell it the vat man?person needs their share.

If you decide to reclaim some of the VAT you are probably safe in expecting an "assurance visit" from your local VAT office, when the split between private and alleged business use will be carefully considered.

perhaps our return is diferent but we do not put indevidual amounts in just totals, our acountant checks our inputs and outgoings monthly and its them I have to watch out for or should I say Her!!. yes we do have custom checks and yes they do find fault with what we have done but generaly we get by a bit of give and take.
