Vehicl Weights

Hi All

I am in a quandry over getting the weights for my rig correct.

So theoretical question... If my car is loaded to it's gross vehicle weight(GVW), say 2500kg, and my caravan is loaded to it's MTPLM, say 2000kg, that gives me a Train Weight of 4500Kg.

Now my caravan has an optimal noseweight of 140kg, as this weight is then added to the vehicle, does it become part of the weight of the vehicle and over te GVW?

Hope someone can help..... hell I've been a member of this site for ages, I KNOW someone will be able to, so thanks in anticipation.

Having read this a few times I would say the answer is yes.

But are you sure about that caravan noseweight as they are normally around 100kg on an Alko. Also are you planning a long trip running at these maximums.

It depends ..........!!

Some vehicles have two Gross Vehicle Weights quoted in their EEC Certificate of Conformity - the first applies solo and the second applies when towing and takes the extra load of the noseweight into account.

As an example, my previous towcar a Vauxhall Astra had the following information on the EEC Certificate of Conformity:-

14.1 Technically permitted maximum laden mass 1735kg *

50 Remarks C7 ad No 14.1 1760 when towing

In other words, the MAW is 1735kg solo, 1760kg towing - the VIN plate simply shows the single figure of 1735kg.

I do know that many other cars have no such variation - the only way to find out is to check the EEC Certificate of Conformity - some manufacturers, like Vauxhall, include the certificate in the document pack but these soon go missing - other manufacturers don't automatically provide the certificate but will if you apply directly to the importer with the full VIN number.

Hi

Slowcoach - I was using theoretical figures to demonstrate the query.

Roger L - If the noseweight then becomes part of the weight in the car, can I then deduct it from the weight on the caravan, i.e. I load the caravan to a weight of 2140 and the car to 2360 still giving me a Gross Train weight of 4500.

Thanks both for your replys
