Hi, thinking of trying Green Spain this year, has anyone been too or know anything about Camping La Paz up on the Costa Verde in Northern Spain. Would really appreciate any feedback, many thanks Richard
Hi Richard - we spent a wonderful 10 days at La Paz in the early 90's, but in ready errected tents. The site itself is in a spectacular location and on 2 levels. The lower level is close to the beach/sea and is relatively flat. The higher level is accessed via an extremely steep hill which all but rugged 4*4's will struggle with. The site owners "tractor" you up to your pitch!!. Most pitches on the upper level are flat/tarraced and with superb views. There is a pleasant site bar/restaurant (more cafe!) which is child friendly. Local supermarket was about 15 miles down the road - well camouflaged!
The surrounding area is absolutely outstanding! The more I think about it the more I want to go back.
We stayed on this site for 6 days last May. Fantastic!!! very helpful and friendly people running it despite limited english. I would definitely go back.
Don't worry about the very steep access mentioned which is quite true (bet you've never seen anything like it before!)but the operators are very competent in getting your unit to the pitch you select, virtually all of which are pretty flat. We had two units right down by the beach which was just great (altho' a bit of a trudge up to the facilities)
There is a good bar and cafe with excellent views along the dramatic coast with the Picos foothills as backdrop and you can walk direct from the campsite along unspoilt coastline or on the beautiful smallish sandy beach particularly at low tide.
Llanes is the only sizeable coast town and possibly a bit disappointing but don't miss the walk on the cliff top to the West of town along the fortifications! There are a couple of restaraunts to the East on the coast road at the fringes of Llanes - choose the one just above a largish tarmac car park.
Picos are just wonderful too. The Cares Gorge is simply spectacular and uncrowded unless you are going in high season. Also try Potes on market day for a real old fashioned feel of N Spain country life and the local bars doing tapas. The real thing not the tourist trap you often get.
