Hi we ar going to look at 2 potential caravans tomorrow, but unfortunately neither of them is at the sellers home, they are both on a site in Dorset.

Would you therefore advise not agreeing to purchase until we had seen them back at the sellers home? Just going on some things I've read. thanks again

if the 'van has cris markings which can be checked and the "owner" has the necessary documentation to prove ownership you should be ok. personally i'd be wary.

if there's any doubt in your mind, or anything at all doesn't seem right walk away.

I'd want to see some positive i.d. (drivers licence, passport, utility bill) as well as proof that the seller owned the caravan before parting with any cash.

If you like the caravan don't just had over the money in a field or site.

Insist on going to the home of the seller to make any payment, just make an excuse and call round the next day. Make sure that you go indoors too.

If the asking price sounds too good to be true it usually is Sharon. Just be very careful and although it costs to check the CRIS # it could be worth it. Don't forget any damp problems either.

I hate to see people get ripped off.

Might also be worth having a word with the owner of the site where they are situated.

Agree with all that's been said. CRIS check would be an absolute MUST for me. If they aren't agreeable to that, walk away.

Obviously and no offence meant, (but people fall for it), DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES turn up with CASH there and then. You could be mugged for that cash.....or worse.

People who deal in dodgy caravans will not have any scruples about doing you over if they know you have a big wad of cash with you. It's happened, and doubtless it will happen again.

If it's the real deal, then it's worth waiting for.

from the little info you've provided I'd be very wary.

You dont say if the vans are on the same site (or even close) also you dont say if the originating area of sale is Dorset and again are both vans from the same originating area.

Dont take any form of cash with you , and at this stage dont give the sellers too much detail about yourself either.

And ditto everything thats been said. Be very cautious and do the checks.

If you are not 100% walk away , there are (and probably will be) plenty of vans for sale in the coming months.

could be something in that trev. its dependant on how much you know about caravans.

if you don't know too much you're better off buying with a guarantee.

if you know exactly what you're looking at you might get a bargain.

as i say, if you're unsure at all walk away from them.

Have a look but take no large sum,s money with you to many bad people around. If you like wait you see make a note of the criss number so you can check the van out. Also find the site warden make sure the caraven does belong to the person who is in front of you. If it seems to good to be true or the seller does not seem right walk away.

Just another view, when we were selling our van it was in storage 10miles away. We invited a potential buyer to view on site as, if they weren't interested, it saved us the hassle of getting it out and bringing it home. We also offered, before viewing, to bring it home and show everything working if the person was interested.

The upshot was that the chap came, fell in love with the van at the storage yard, he came back to our house, we gave him all the CRIS details so he could check it out before any money changed hands. Once the CRIS was OKd, he put the money in our bank and we towed it over the next day.

Yes,you have to be extremely careful but I don't think, with care, there is anything wrong from buying privately rather than a dealer. There are genuine reasons for sales.
