Vinyl or tiles?

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of removing the carpet from my caravan but not sure whether to replace it with vinyl or self adhesive floor tiles.

My concern with floor tiles is that there will always be a chance of water getting between them or them lifting up.

If I use vinyl how do I stick it to the floor? Or would it be easier to get a carpet fitter to do it?

Interested to know if anyone has done this and for any tips you may have.

Thanks.

We replaced the ageing carpet in our 1993 Swift recently.
Cut out the old one flush with any fitted cupboards etc. Removed the rear storage boxes to clear as much of the floor space as we could. We then used quality carpet tiles and carpet tape.
It actually didnt take as long as we thought it would, and we are very very happy with the results

(we also tidied up the heater at the same time)

TBH we had put it off thinking it was quite a big job, but it wasnt too bad. Well worth the effort

Trying to move away from carpet as we have a dog and 3 boys. I might put some removable rugs in for winter usage.

Hi, Irons, we have two dogs and tend to go for a 4 x 4 metre off cut fron a carpet store and fit it myself about £80. Change it after 18 months . Take it up for annual inspections. But each to there own.

Vinyl is stuck to the floor with double sided tape around the edges.

Use a curved bladed knife to cut it, DONT use a straight Stanley blade.

Remember that if you cut it wrongly that's IT, its done and no going back, whereas with carpet you can get away with slight mistakes.

If you go the vinyl route it would be sensible to get a fitter to do it for you, he works with it day in day out.

If you want something practical have a look at www.splendidpets.co.uk They do something called a dirt trapper mat - they are those (usually) dark grey mats with a 1" wide rubber edge all round of the type that you often walk on entering a shop or office block.

We bought one for use in our porch at home and it was so successful we got another to replace the main carpet around the door/cooker in the caravan. We still have the original carpet between the beds (2 berth.)

They collect any dirt that may be attached to your shoes and can be easily vac'ced clean. They are rubber backed so don't slip, are easy to cut to get around fixed objects, and if wet they dry very quickly.

Not cheap but the are worth the money.

Just before I bought my van the previous owner had the delamination seen to and new carpet fitted. Unfortunately it wasn't good quality and quickly became tatty and grubby. I decided to get rid of it and replace with vinyl and a carpet runner. I found an 'end of roll' offcut at Leroy Merlins in Calais as I returned from Spain. The replacement carpet had been fitted to the existing furniture and glued down but it came out easily. I used it as a template to cut the vinyl. My van, being an Avondale had the spare wheel well set into the floor which added a complication but I trimmed the edges with 25mmx25mm ali angle.

Now it's a simple job to take the runner outside for cleaning and use a damp mop on the vinyl.

that looks fab Jaydug. We have an Avondale and have been considering doing the same thing. Now we know how good it looks, that's what we'll be doing.

Although it may be a bit heavy I had considered using interlocking finished floor planks. These could make a very pleasant finished floor.
