Voltswagen Touran 2.0 tdi Fuel Consumption

We have recently started towing an Adria Altea 432px (approx 1200 kg) with a new Touran 2.0 tdi ( it has still not done 3000 miles yet)At present I am only getting between 28 and 30 to the gallon on both motorway and main roads. Does anyone get a better consumption than this? and is the return likely to improve as the vehicle beds in?

Hi Paul, I've got the same car in DSG form, and tow a 1500 Kg. 'van with it. Solo I'm getting 42-44 mpg, and towing drops it down to around 27 mpg. Keep a close eye on your oil level, as they do tend to be rather oil thirsty until about 12-15,000 mls. From memory, I put my first ltr. in around 5,000.

Hi Paul,

I had a 2.0ltr 140 Touran for 3years 90k miles.towing a 1400mtplm bailey 30mpg,solo 50plus.most drivers with a manual gearbox would say the same as has often been said on here.

Hi,

You should see about a 10% improvement in mpg after about 10-20k, we found that our S-max used more fuel in 6th gear than in 5th when it was new, solo. Now with 29k on the clock even with a medium size trailer on the back, 6th is more economical but too high a ratio to tow our 1600kg caravan.

New engines "leak" quite a lot past the rings and valves and pulling a high gear requires more cylinder pressure than a low gear so the leakage is worse hence the high gear becoming more economical as the engine runs in and the rings and valves seal better.

Certainly for the s-max, using a gear slightly lower than you would normally use for the 1st 5-10k gave better consumption

Thanks Eddie will keep an eye on Oil. At present I am only getting about 38 to the gallon but hope it will get better as I am only doing short runs. Good to know consumptions not as bad as I thought. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply Frank. I am not getting as good a return as 50 to the gallon yet but hopefully will improve as it beds in.

Garfield thanks for the reply. I will try out running in both 5th and 6th to see which better. Touran pulls in both equally as well but I will see how it affects consumption. Cheers
