Would any Volvo dealer-fitted detachable, Swan neck towball be 50mm and if so, would it be compatible with an Alko hitch/stabilser?

Yes - all swan-neck or detachable tow-balls are AL-KO and Winterhoff compatible. These are the preferred fitment in Europe and have always been AL-KO compatible

It's only with the flange-plate tow-balls that you need to exercise caution and get the right tow-ball.
