Hi I am new to this site but would appreciate any replies to my question, I have a 2005 volvo v70 estate 2.4 diesel with geartronic transmission and i am looking at towing a caravan with a MTPLM of 1500kg,(single or twin axle) has anybody used this vehicle for towing a caravan this weight and if so any problems. Any replies greatly accepted. Thanks Duncan.

Check your vehicle kerbside weight; if you are relatively new to towing then you shouldn't go much over the 85% rule, the caravan MTPLM should not exceed 85% of the towing vehicle's kerbside weight. According to Parkers guide online, your car is 1575kg so the caravan would be 95% - sorry, not advisable unless you know what you are doing. Very unfortunate that Volvo now produce a great car considerably lighter than the Mondeo and others, but anyway check your weights first.

I have a V70 with quite a heavy caravan and get into difficulties (especially this year) managing that weight with front wheel drive on grassy pitches - have been pushed or pulled twice this summer! I imagine a V70 4x4 would be just the ticket! (and it's heavier).

Alan,

Thanks for your reply, I have previous towing experience through towing parents caavan but that has always been with a discovery where weight ratio has never really been an issue, but i keep getting different reports regarding the volvo so i thougt i would ask other caravanners about there experiences.

Thanks again Duncan.

Alan,

A technicality 85% is definatley not a rule, it is only a guideline.

As for the proposed match, my sources indicate that the Volvo is rated to tow up to 1800Kg.

I do think the current sugegstion is high, especaily for a beginer, though legally you could go up to 1800!

Hi Duncan, try looking at www.whattowcar.com .

I have a 52 S80 D5 Auto, tugging a 04 Senator Oklahoma, mtplm about 1450kg. According to the above site I'm pulling at 89% and if you're motor is the same engine (163bhp) you'd be pulling my van at 84% as you're kerbweight is 1717kgs.

My car pulls the van great, no problem and if I'm on site or grass I just press the 'W' switch (for winter driving) which acts like a lower ratio gear and have never had any problems.

Also, I can get over 32mpg driving steadily on m/way, and 95% of the time I'm getting over 29mpg average (acc. to cars computer).

Hope this helps,

Regards, Gaz.

hi Duncan, i tow a twin axle with a 2.4 petrol V70 at 95%. been towing 15 years so have some experiance and, a twin is a more stable combination. I would advise you to take the car to a local weigh station as my vehicle came in higher than the book weight, and hence allowed my to make a more informed decision on the weight i could tow. do allow for the +-5% accuracy of weigh bridges though.

Just a small comment. Is the car actually a Geartronic, or an Automatic? It is just that Volvo downgraded the towing limits for the Geartronic models. Also just doublecheck the car has been fitted with Nivoma shock adsorbers (It should be) and then towing will be a lot easier.

I also agree get the car weighed. My Volvo was 100 kg more than the book weight.

I have a V70 D5 56 reg with geartronic. I have been concerned re the drop when the van is on gives a nose down situation. I have had grounding problems which Volvo do not seem to be interested. with your Nivoma shocks will that help reduce that problem?

David,

we had the same problem with ours, added secondary springs to the rear and what a differance! was even better to drive with or without the van. Cost around

I have an S80 and when I asked Volvo to fit the towbar they suggested the Nivomats as well. Yes, it cost me about
