Volvo V70 petrol or diesel?

Thinking of going back to Volvo for our replacement towcar with a second hand V70. Our old 740 was very reliable and went on for ever but it was only 2ltr and was hopeless as a tow car. Is the V70 any good for towing and is it as durable as the old 740? Also is it really best to choose the diesel engine? If not the Volvo, any other recommendations for a good sized estate to replace our Vectra SRI150. Thanks, Jim.

Hi,

Volvo have offered a range of diesel engines in the V70 - ranging from the Audi A6 sourced five cylinder diesel to their own (and newest) D5 units - all of them have been good.

I'm sure you'll pay a premium for a V70 diesel though, as you would for any similar premium diesel estate car - like a Mercedes E-class estate, BMW 5 series estate, etc. Compared to the Volvo, these have the advantage of rear-wheel drive, and all of them will offer significantly more interior space than your current Vectra.

I,ve just changed my 2005 V70 for a new type. The previous one was a D5 and an absolutely superb towcar. It was also very reliable and extremely economical, doing well over 50 to the gallon. Although a lot of my driving was motorway / main road on cruise control. You couldn't fail to be impressed with it.

As for the new one? The jury's still out. I haven't towed enough with it yet. Very nice car. Much heavier. More powerful engine. But a lot less mpg (not good at this present time)

Thanks Robert, good to see Volvo still seen as in the same class as Mercedes etc.

Hi jim, thanks for that. I had heard that the D5 was very powerful but also economical and its good to have that confirmed. I think thats what we will go for. We wont be looking at a new one because of the cost but there seem to be some 4 or 5 year old bargains around. Our old 740 was 10 years old when we bought it and 20 years old when we sold it ( for spares) with 210,000 on the clock. Jim.
