I have one, the lower power 2.4D (~160hp)not the D5 (~180hp).
The trip computer says I am getting 25mpg at 60mph on the motorway while towing.
Around town (not towing) I also get 25mpg.
On the motorway without the van I get about 30 to 35mpg.
I had a VW Sharan 1.9TDi before, this had better mpg (obviously) and went up hills when towing better than the Volvo. The awd drive sytem will send some of your power to the rear which saps some of the power - I wish Volvo had given the option to select this mode instead.
While towing the Volvo and van are rock solid, whereby in the VW I used to have white knuckle syndrome when overtaking, or being over taken by coaches and lorries. This I really appreciate.
But best of all I can now traverse a wet field and not worry about getting stuck, which the VW did very often.
So as far as performance is concerned do you really need the extra traction? I never thought I would, unitl I got stuck too many times.
If you do need to transport 7 people the Volvo is great with 7 full size seats, I have sat in the rear on a 150 mile journey and there is plenty of leg room. Boot is limited to a small shopping trip with rearmost seats erected, but cavernous when they are sunk into the floor of the boot. Easy to do as well.
The second hand prices of these modesl has now dropped into the range of normal people! THIS EXLAINS WHY I KEEP SEEING THEM EVERWHERE - I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BE THE DOGSB******* WHEN WE BOUGHT OURS!
