I have a 2.0TDI Saloon (MY06)140bhp. I would like to confirm the kerbweight against which to apply the 85% rule. The car handbook says 1464kg. A previous copy of Practical Caravan Review says 1648kg. Can anyone confirm explain / confirm ? What max weight is recommended based on experience ?

Look on your car's V5 - if it states "Mass in service" that'll give the EC sales definition of kerbweight, ie 90% fuel plus 75kg for driver and loose tools.

Only very recent cars have that on the V5, though.

Thanks for the advise. However it is a company car and I do not hold the V5. It is with a fleet company.

Unless a range is given in the car handbook, you can be fairly sure that the kerbweight quoted is for the minimum spec base model without any factory-fitted options. The figure in the PC review is probably actual measured data. A difference of 180kg, as in your case, is not unusual and one can be reasonably certain that one's car will always be at least as heavy, if not heavier, than any published data that is not specific to any particular vehicle.

VW brochure lists it as 1648kg, max tow weight as 1800kgs.

85% is therefore 1400kgs.

I`ve got a 140 sport estate and over the weighbridge it came in at 1760 kgs.Admittedly I was in it at the time, but despite copious amounts of Timothy Taylors I don`t weigh THAT much.

Latest VW Passat Estate brochure quotes 140 diesel (Manual) as 1510kg unladen, max tow 1800kg. The 170 diesel (manual) is quoted as 1714kg unladen, max tow 1800kg. 204kg difference - for what ?

Same cars as saloon version are both 1648kg unladen, 1800kg max tow. Go figure that !

Best take demo/own model to weighbridge - we did same thing with diesel X-Trail (actual weight : 1640kg; brochure : 1525-1625kg with no breakdown by model). Ann

Because there can be a substantial difference from one car to the next, any published data, whether in the brochures or in any of the databases such as whattowcar, etc., must always be treated for approximate reference purposes only.
