Good morning all
thinking of changing my 520td Auto to a 2lt td Tiguan, Im towing a challenger 570 and the bmw does a great job but the price to upgrade may be a bit steep mines 09 plate and looking at new Tiguan but want auto for the wife who preferes them.
Any ideas would be much apprieciated.

I would test drive the new X3 myself.
8 speed auto, has won every group test to date, lastest test in whatcar , on sale last week.
Is actually lower on the emissions than the manuel version, has lots of torque over a large rev band.
Auto has a 100kg nose limit, tows 2000kg.

Youve changed your tune on auto's Ray LOL
The X3 at the moment has no offers and a waiting list as its a new car but with auto on a base model you are looking at 33k plus.Its unladen weight is only 1790kgs so 2000kg would exceed the kerbweight of the car .
The Tiguan and Q5 are basically the same as are the engines but the Tiguan is cheaper and much better value but you will take a hit in the first year,but if you buy a 1 yr one well you are quids in.
The auto is a 7 speed box but i think you can only get the 140 bhp diesel engine in auto form and not all models offer the same engines, whereas the Q5 does the more powerful 170 diesel which also has stop/start.
The towing weights are the same for auto manual its just the engine you choose.
Of course the Q5 and Tiguan have offers on at the moment.
Interesting comparison if you bought a new Q5 or a new Nissan Xtrial over 3 years the Q5 would be cheaper to run (running costs and depreciation).

For some reason i can't reply to the last post?
Anyway obviously 2000kg is heavier than the cars kerb weight, thats the braked trailer limit, not the caravan limit.
Common sense has to prevail.
The xtrail will tow 2200kg, and only has a kerb of 1720kg, for my model.

I am still a manuel man, but the X3 is the first auto that i have been impressed by, on paper, having not driven it.
When i checked out the Q5, it only had a nose weight limit of 80kg, not much use for a 4x4.
I can't say what the tiguan is, so i advise you check, probably 80kg?

If you drive a 7 or 8 speed you cant tell the difference as they do not always select the individual gears in strict order, missing out a particular gear if necessary.
The 100kg noseweight is a step in the right direction but you must remember the Alko hitch is max 100kgs so best to always be below.
80kgs is still a usable loading as these cars are really classed as SUV's or crossover's and are in line with large car loadings.
As you have a BMW 520 already with a 75kgs nose weight i doubt the Tiguan's 80kgs will cause you any issues?
