Wasps - does anyone know how to keep them away?

Enjoyed 2 weeks in Snowdinia, was expecting midges being in a forrest, but instread were plagued by wasps, little man (4) was stung on his finger at Cricceith, screamed for 20 mins, started to swell up, and had to make a forced march to a pharmacy for some Piriton and Paediatric paracetamol.

We use Avon SSS and a deet based mossie repellant but the wasps take no notice! tried Citronella candles but they were no help either.

We went with another family, and my friend has severe wasp venom allergy, she has been through the desensitisation program but it did not work for her, so she carries a couple of epi-pens and some antihistamine.

There must be something they don,t like.

They definitely don't like a rolled up newspaper applied to their head with force.

Apart from that I can't say I've ever heard of anything to keep them away. My wife absolutely hates them and will go to extremes to get out of their way. Would be interested to hear if anyone has an effective deterrent.

Give the wasps something else to feed on. The old fashioned way is to have a jam jar with a little jam left in it (strawberry or raspberry works well) mixed with about an inch of water. Put the metal lid back on with a hole punched in it, big enough for the wasp to get in. They are then quite good at drowning themselves, caught at least 20 in one day.

Not sure if that would deter or attract them. I had actually forgotten about that method, an old neighbour of my mother's used to have a jar sat at her back door in the summer, had wasps crawling all over it. I felt it was more of an attraction than a deterrent.

Found a thing on the net called a waspinator, this is a fake hanging nest and will ( it is claimed ) keep wasps away for fear of being attacked by rivals. I will send for one and try it out, and keep you posted.

I have known my friend for 22 years and would prefer not to have to do CPR on her! Her venom antbodies were off the scale even after the desensitisation treatment.

Where we were we would have needed to wallpaper the entire van with it, it really was wasp heaven. They would crawl in if the windows were on the ventilation catch, and as soon as you chase them out some more would come in. but it is a good idea I will try and get some to keep in the van.

I too have to carry an epi-pen as the little sods nearly did me in a few years ago, i still cant find anything that gets rid of them.

I have to carry an epi pen as i am allergic , but even after using the pen i still have to go to nearest hospital , so around the garden i have 3 plastic like clear bulbs to wich i put honey and sugar mixed wth a drop of lemonade , it fills up within days with flies and wasps ,

Himself is allergic to wasp stings and carries epipens at all times.It is like the 3 minute warning for the end of the worl if one dares to come near so I am most interested in some of the ideas listed.I have taken them all on board and have decided on this coarse of action. Smear the awning furthest away from us with all manner of sweet sticky stuff, arm ourselves with all the weapons suggested,take the tablets, rub in the lotions and sit back and watch the outcome?????
On a more serious note it must have been horrible when the little one was stung.I have only been stung once and it was not a very bad experience as no one else noticed until I removed the wasp from my leg.Rhino hide or maybe the fat helps!!!

For anyone who isn't sensitive to wasp venom but who is stung by a wasp, ordinary vinegar applied to the area will dramatically reduce any pain until a proprietary treatment can be bought from a chemist.

Thanks for all the replies, I think this is going to be an ongoing battle with Vespula germanica and company, I suppose it is one benefit of the end of summer when they die off or hibernate.
