Water PSI Too High For Carver Heater

The gasket on our internal water pump, for the taps etc, gave up & we couldn't get any replacements (Buccanneer caravan about 10 years old) so we had no chioce but to get a new pump. A whale 12 ltr unit was installed, but when it's switched on & all taps are off it pulses on every few seconds & the excess water is forced out of our Carver water heater (outside thankfully).

Now this is our first caravan so I've no experience of these matters, but upon some investigation I found that the new pump's cutout is at 45psi whereas the Carver's safety valve operates at 44psi. The old pump has 16psi written on it so I presume that's its cutout & the Carver's manual states that it expects water at about 20psi so that seems correct.

So my questions are:

- Does my theory sound right, is the new pressure just too high for the rest of the water system? (If not what do you think it is)

- Can I do anything about it without changing the pump?

- Where can I source a pump with the correct psi (as the people who sold me this one say its the 'normal' one & don't stock a lower psi model).

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Your figures are spot on, and this pressure will damage the water heater and needs reducing.

Fortunatly this is a simple matter of unscrewing the adjustment screw on the end of the pumps pressure switch.

The carvers pressure relief valve pressure was set when the tie rod holding the tank on was 16mm diameter, it's now 12mm and further weakened at the inboard end by being drilled to take a 6mm bolt. These later tie rods will begin to stretch above 30psi and be permanantly stretched above 40psi.

Therefore check the tank for movement against the casting in the wall by trying to rock the tank at the inboard end, it should not move. If it does then the heater will need repairing as it will soon start to leak at the joint...inside the van!!
