Water Pump

Hello there, I wonder if I could pick a few people's brains?

Our new (well new to us, it is a 1989 van) has a water pump, on our first run with it the other weekend we could not get it to work and we thought it might be something to do with the fuse. I have now changed the fuse and the minute you turn the electric one, it springs into life, even if I have not turned a tap on. However, it just seems to run and run and run.

So I followed the manual, turned all the taps on and put it into our full water container. It seems to fill up the water heater first (even though this was not on) and unfortunately nothing came out of the tap, though I may not have waited long enough. My question is this, will it fill the water heater up first and then send the water through to the taps, but then how do I get cold water? Will it then turn off when i turn a tap off?

It is obviously picking the water up as I drained the heater and it filled it again, so any ideas what it could be? Any help gratefully appreciated, before we go on our two week break in it next week!

From your description you have a pressure switch system, unless there is another fault.
Look inside the van under the seat where the water comes in from the outside.
Where the pipe comes off the inlet you should find an oblong box with two wires in one end and a wheel on top.
That is the pressure switch.
With pump connected and water available, switch on power, open the HOT tap and wait for all the air to be replaced by water, close the tap, then do the same for COLD at each tap.
The pump should stop after a short time,,,,,3 to 4 seconds once all taps are shut.
If it does not, turn the wheel on the pressure switch anticlockwise until it does stop.
Then open a cpld tap, th epump shoul drun, shut the tap it should stop.
Now try a Hot tap, open the tap, pump runs, close the tap the pump should run on for 3 to 4 seconds.

The water heater WILL be filled even though it is not on, and the water heater should NOT be switched on until the water system is full
