water system

This is complicated so bear with me.I have an onboard water tank that runs via a wall switch,ie when the external water runs out I flick the switch on the wall to internal.The onboard water tank froze solid during the big freeze and the onboard pump cracked so I replaced it.What happens now is when you run a tap on external the flow is poor because half off the flow is going into the on board tank,when the on board tank fills up I flick the switch back to internal and the system works fine.Any ideas of what is wrong?
 
the original onboard tank pump would have had a non-return valve fitted as standard, but the replacement pump doesn`t. come across this before especially on the older bailey senators.
 
you can, or fit a non-return valve inline in the pipe to the onboard pump. if you chose to do this, make sure the non-return valve is in the right way.
 
I called a couple of caravan shops today and they have the valve,the wee problem I have is they are asking what diameter the pipe is,I have no idea as the van is on site 50 miles away and I would like to buy the valve this week and fit it at the weekend.Do you have any idea what diameter the pipe is ?
 
If you go the in line valve route its definietly worth getting a spare. Had to replace the internal pump on an 02 Wyoming and went the in line valve route. The valve used to fail about twice a year, the innards just broke up. Also most of the in line valves are a larger diameter than fit easiy in the pipe so if you have this situation, heat the ends of the pipe up with a hair dryer or hot water so you can slip them over the ends of the valve more easily and reduce the risk of damaging the valve. Hi Tim thanks for the info. I know about the hair dryer trick, were snouts did you put the inline valve? Ie is it right next to the pump so that it's in the onboard tank or further down the line?

The valve has to go in the pipe connected to the internal pump before it joins the rest of the system. From memory we put it somewhere on top of the internal tank where it was easy to get at it. Wouldn't recommend submerging it inside the tank as you have unnecessary clips underwater.
