Hi Darren

Why do you want to do this? My van has a factory fitted on board tank - note this is not fitted in a locker, but underslung near the axles. On arrival, this requires 3 trips to the water point with the aquaroll and pumping of contents to on board tank each time. Relax because I don't have fill up for 2 or 3 days? Not quite, as the Wastemaster has a lower capacity than the on board tank, so still needs emptying at the same frequency.

Abroad, the water is cooler than aquaroll-in-the-sun all day water. If you are tempted by the idea of having a supply whilst you travel this is not a good idea, since water is heavy and mobile.

In terms of chores done, I don't think there's any gain to be made

In terms of convenience, you fill up less frequently, but spend more time doing it. Unless you fit a water level gauge as well, water will still run ot out the most inconvenient time!

Hello darren,

I think chris' point about the weight is highly relevant, basic school science will tell you that every litre of water weighs 1Kg, so to have any meaningful amount in the tank when travelling is swallowing up payload for other items.

also I note you intend putting it the front under seat lockers, which will add considerably to the caravans nose load. we see all to often contributors to this forum having difficulty in keeping nose loads down.

Inboard tanks are more difficult to keep clean, at least with an outboard tank you can pick it up and swill some cleaner around all its internal surfaces. Let me see you do that with a whole caravan attached to the tank!

Hi Darren.

Both Chris and John have valid points.

We have a 25 year old caravan which when we bought it, had an onboard water tank fitted in the rear bunk room under the bottom bunk.

With a capacity of about 50 litres that was a hell of a lot of lost weight carrying capacity, plus our car was actually 50Kgs shy of enough tow capacity to cope with the full designed weight of the van. (I know that's a bit naughty, but if loaded 50Kgs light it's legal).

Finally the tank was possibly (we didn't have any conformation of replacements) 18 years old when we got the van so it has had those years to cultivate all sorts of lovely tummy bugs!!

We chose to use a 40Ltr aqua roll and a 29 Ltr as back up as these are not only easily cleanable but also quite cheaply replaced. Our waste master placed at the kitchen outlet and 20Ltr can placed at the bathroom outlet can handle the dirty water and as we can put the can on top of the waste master for transportation to the disposal point.

Having the two aqua rolls also means that should we run out of water while her ladyship is washing the royal barnet, I can just swap over the pump in seconds and then take a leisurely strole to the tap with the empty barrel to fill it. Major chrisis averted!!!

My last comment is, why have a tank of water slopping round to cause more instability through enertia etc, trying to steer the van where you don't want it to go?

There's an old saying KISS, keep it simple stupid.

After all we all want a drama free and easy holiday.

Cheers Steve L.

We run an Abbey Cardinal 312.

Now this has an amazing kitchen in the rear offside corner with cupboards I can't fill !!

In the cupboard with the cutlery drawer I have 2 Water containers [ not sure of the size I admit - but each one does more than 1 day for all water [ no showers and frequently no washing up done in Van ] My husband has organised things so that we fill those and the pump goes into them - no outside container - so no bugs or dirty container to stow away at the end. The containers can be carried and we normally travel with them full.
