Hi, just got back from our first trip. Outfit - 2008 Mondeo Estate 2.0TDCI & 1991 Abbey Oxford.
Went down to Pentewan Sands Park for the week, which was 250 miles away. Caravan towed very well, considering it was my first time! I was a bit worried about some of the movement from the back, but then afterwards I got used to it and after the 1st 100 miles guessed it was 'normal'. Just a bit of tugging and swaying when overtaking lorries and up hills/under bridges etc. The car pulled well and I was pleased I had chosen the towcar of the year winner (by default, company car chosen last year). Saw some right 'dodgy' outfits going very quickly and switching lanes quickly making the caravan sway quite badly. Also a lot of outfits with the 'van quite heavy on the nose, some with the jockey wheel almost touching the road!.
When we got to the site we went through the barrier without checking in so had to park on the public carpark for a while ehilst I went into reception. Had to reverse out of our parking position which was the first time ever. Couldn't reverse onto the pitch however as I kept cocking it up and the kids were screaming in the back.
Found pitching up quite heavy going, especially levelling (very awkward) and the awning was a nightmare. Once we were set up everything was dandy, except having two very young children we were wishing for a double dinette setup rather than our end bathroom 'van, so we could put the kids away and have the other end to ourselves. Fortunately the weather was kind so sitting outside was OK. Used the shower once and found the pressure too low to be any use, just dribbled with either red hot or freezing cold water. Toilet wouldn't flush, tried fuse and safety switch to no avail so we used a jerry can to flush and didn't have a number 2 (thank god I went in the disposal point after someone today who was emptying a cassette with poo, yukky). Everything else was great. I must say though I was disappointed the neighbours waste was going into a tank which had all the caps off, so the water was constantly dribbling into the grass, I didn't think that was on at all. Next trip is August bank holiday, can't wait! Sorry to of typed so much I could go on forever about this experience, maybe the mag should have more on newbies?
Thanks all for your ongoing advice.
