We have an Old Bailey Ranger in Good Condition and suitable for our needs but issue is really a pain in the back - quite literally.

Our Bailey gives a damn good thump in the back when braking and similar in reverse when pully away indicating perhaps worn components or braking system needing attention. The Pre-load spring (hydraulic on later models) has been renewed and adjusted in accordance to data but still the thump in the back.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I was in our storage yard the other day, a guy there had thumping and clunking on braking along with the handbrake flying up at high speed when applied, turned out (& I’ve never heard of this before) that the bull nosed nut and locking nut on the brake rod at the brake balance bar were both missing!

It would also be sensible to have the tow bar on the tow vehicle checked in case something is loose there.

Good point Prof. I had a first generation Mondeo estate and on a journey back from Scotland I had a knocking sound during take off and braking. I did the standard roadside checks but couldn’t find anything. When I got home I put the car up and found that one of the towbar fixing points on a front to back body memeber was slack and deformed inwards. The muppet who fitted the towbar had not correctly. installed the spacer into the body member. So as torque was applied the body member started to deform inwards.. An approved fitter sorted it out but the “ errant” spacer that was inside the body member rolled backwards and forward…. very irritating. An injection of high expansion foam sorted that out, and knock free towing was resumed.

I'm happy to fix most things on caravan but when comes to brakes best leave it to professionals.

Talking to our man that services our caravan, he said hardly ever sees problems with damper, very often sees problems with brakes not adjusted correctly giving the symptoms suggested, confirmed when I collected a used Coachman for a friend, terrible over run on slowing , and when serviced, brakes were not working properly, once adjusted it elliminated the problem
