Anyone venturing out this week. We are booked in on a CL in Cheshire on Thursday hope we don't have too much Snow. Won't be bothered when on site not the first time we have had snow while away. (Do have a 4X4 though).

4x4 can and do get stuck just like other cars particularly if they have summer type tyres. I look forward to next week as I've not seen snow in these here parts for around five years. We get floods. But the cars are now fitted with Cross Climate + tyres so if they are as good as shown on YouTube and German tyre tests I look forward to being stuck behind all the cars and trucks who aren't going anywhere on their summer tyres. :)

We have Knokia weatherproofs, but cant get away due to teenagers birthday party's and hospital appointments over the next month. Snow doesn't worry us, you either get there, and then stay there. Or pitch up and sell burgers and soup in a laybye.from the BBQ.

Hi Sir Crying,

I will likely be using the A66 later in the year, what is there to dread about the A66?

What sections will you be using?, any tips and hints appreciated.

And that's exactly where you will be. No matter how good your vehicle, tyres & driving if the ones in front get stuck then in most cases you'll just be another vehicle in the queue behind them. :( :(

Sir Haggis ( minus the pink text ) !
The A66 in the above mentioned is treacherous in the winter as it is a flat Road and fields side by side with no coverage for the road. It's also horrible on the road if it is windy, I've seen a few caravans on the side on the open bits of the A66 so just be careful , if it snows heavy they normaly shut the road but in the summertime later on the year you should be ok. :)

Craig.

Spot on. I recall in December 1981we were coming back from the Midlands after delivering Christmas presents and I was driving our 1.8 Marina estate. The snow was heavy all the way south down the M5 and onto the M4 with us navigating past many stranded vehicles. But when I thought that we were home and dry the A46 junction to Bath had been closed and even the snow ploughs were being dug out. The Marina had the old style town and country tyres and did remarkably well in what were difficult conditions. So we spent the night in the gritting depot on the M4 Junction 18. A well known resident of Buckingham Palace was also out delivering Christmas presents to her family and her Range Rover convoy also got stranded about 1 mile from us. Luckily for the lady in question she spent the night at the Crossed Hands pub in Old Sodbury. Guess that you cannot win hem all!

We are off to a small private rally near Arbroath tomorrow, just in the process of loading up today. Only there for a week for a bit of sea fishing and walks. Nice 1000 mile round trip to look forward to. Happy days.

All being well, Kay and I are going to a lovely CL near Ripon for a few days on Wednesday. As it’s our wedding anniversary on Saturday, I might even treat her to a cup of coffee or an ice cream  ) somewhere. I know, I know, she’s spoiled, but tells me she’s worth it! I’m just an old romantic at heart really.

Speaking as someone who has jackknifed a caravan 4x4 outfit when towing in snow..........then I would stay at home given the UK weather forecast for the coming week

Mind you.. I am alright Jack :) ...23 degC shown on the caravan thermometer here in Andalusia today.

I intend calling the site owners before we leave here to see what the state of the local roads are up there. If there’s a doubt then we’ll revert to Plan B (whatever that might be).

Given the warnings about the weather I am somewhat at a loss as to why people want to take the risk of travelling at the moment.
Not only are you putting yourself at risk and your vans, but also the rest of the general public by having a big white box behind you which makes a perfect target for some unfortunate who is not as wonderful a driver as you (think) you are!!.

I agree Damian,we've cancelled this weekend trip due to the weather, here in sunny lancashire ;) its forecast snow for Friday late on,as I'll be driving up to the lakes.
There's always another trip to look forward to,best not risk it.On a slightly different note, say what you like about the camc booking system,at times like this it helps, cancel at no cost and rebook for May bank holiday.
Safe journeys if you're away soon.

They might beg to differ. Properly prepared vehicles, no “wonderful” drivers, just common sense, and in conditions far colder than we’re expecting. Total number of incidents or mishaps was nil.

Speaking personally, like I said we will make a judgement on Wednesday morning. I will not take any unnecessary risks (no more than I do every time that I go anywhere in a car!), hence contacting the site to see what the state of the local roads are. The roads from here to there are main A-roads and motorways, so if they are not 100% clear then we will not go, but WE will make that decision.

We are just about to set off on our 500 mile trip to Arbroath. Vehicle / van / us / safety equipment etc. all checked and ok. With proper preparation and planning it will be approached as any other journey. Can't see the problem......we purchase caravans to be used....not sat on the drive rusting!.

Have a safe trip. Couldn’t help smiling at a picture on BBC News app. It was a Twitter post of snow outside someone’s house in Gillingham Kent. Hardly a Beast as most of us have seen heavier frosts. When I lived in Canada net snowfall over winter was 13 feet and not a days work missed.

I do beleve in better safe than sorry and would be wary about any trips out given the weather forecast. It is not too bad here but we are on the edge of the area with next amber warning so are wary.
The caravan is next due out in two weeks but that is for a service so even more worrying tnan snow.

I have just checked with the site owner, and as suspected the roads in the remote area that they are located aren't great, so I will not be taking that risk, especially as more snow is forecast. Sadly, we've cancelled that, but on the plus side, we've managed to get into the C&MC's Rowntree Park site at York!

From here to there it's all main roads, so we shouldn't have too much of a problem. It'll bring back memories of 2010 when the daytime temperatures were often into minus double figures!
