We have just been gifted a weber q1000, is there an easy (cheap) way to convert it to use the gas point on van as opposed to the small canisters?

Yes there is. First a length of suitable gas piping and secondly the connection to the gas point on the caravan. We had a length of 2m to keep it well away from the caravan and the porch awning. Our gas point was on the front nearside so easy to access.

Thanks, did you just use a normal gas bottle connection?

There is a gas safety issue here.

According to the Weber web page The BBQ is designed to run on the disposable cannisters of LPG. These are usually Butane gas, and the gas is supplied at bottle pressure to the burner.

The outlet on the side of your caravan will only be the regulated 30mB which is considerably less than the pressure the BBQ is expecting. It is very unwise to operate a gas appliance at anything outside of its rated pressure.

Whilst in this instance the pressure will be lower than the appliance needs, it does mean the flames will be smaller and less stable than they should be, this might lead to parts of the burner not lighting or possibly going out and then leaking an explosive gas air mixture out of the BBQ, which could end up pooling underneath the caravan, depending on how you have sited your caravan.

You should NOT attempt to use the BBQ in this manner.

In addition, never attempt to use the BBQ on Propane gas at bottle pressure, the pressure is much higher than Butane, that can be equally unsafe.

My bad. When checking the web page I never noticed the insert about the disposable cylinders so thanks for highlighting this very essential safety issue.

Here is the Weber Q series bbq owners manual. There are variants that run off of cartridges.( butane-propane mix). Some run off of refillable cylinders.(propane) The OP should identify which his runs off.

Thank you for posting the service manual.

This provides more information about the grills. I am please to see that in fact the grill is designed to use LPG at regulated pressures, which are listed on page 11, but the listing is out of date, as it shows the UK as having 28/37mbar pressures for Butane/ Propane respectively. However it also shows its compatibility with the original EU 30mbar universal standard which is also the UK standard now.

But there is a significant difference between the models designed for LPG EN417 Cartridges, and the models suitable for connection to a larger gas cylinder . The EN417 model has a pressure regulator fitted to the short pigtail that connects to the gas cartridge that controls the gas pressure to the BBQ, Where as the external larger cylinder model relies on a cylinder or bulkhead mounted regulator and low pressure connection hose. The system in caravans with the 30mBar bulkhead fitted regulators should be OK.

However in the EN417 cartridge model, it is not clear from the documentation if the "pigtail" connection can be easily changed and replaced with a simple low pressure hose that can be fed from the gas outlet on the side of the caravan. But if it can, then the appliance should function as intended.

These important differences are not made clear in the sales document I found and based my earlier reply on.

My undersuading is that small disposable cylinders supply gas at a far greater unregulated pressure than the regulated pressure that a caravan BBQ point does.
I would contact webber customer service and ask them before progressing the matter any further.

I would just leave it as it is. With the small cartridges you get infinite portability with it without the caravan. They are cheap as chips if buying somewhere like Go outdoors own brand. If wanting to use in cold weather then other suitable canisters are available with a propane/ butane mix. Albeit more expensive as they tend to be targeted at cold weather campers. I’ve got a number in the garage for two stoves we have, plus emergency needs when a degree of “prepping” may come in handy.

For the volume of gas you get in one they are very expensive!

Yes kg for kg that’s correct. But you have unlimited ability to locate it on your pitch, plus portability to other locations such as beaches, country picnics etc. The cartridges are available throughout Britain and Europe.

But the rib eyes don’t come cheap either.
