Weight plate info for new trailer regulation

Hi

Just about to register for the new required trailer plate and when checking the caravan slightly confused.
The plate has
MIRO 1250 Kg (Mass in running order - empty caravan)
MTPLM 1403 Kg (max permissable weight)

Then also on the plate
0- 100 Kg
1 - 1500 Kg
2 - N/A

So is the gross weight allowed 1500 Kg and not the 1403 Kg?

0 - 100Kg is the max weight on the jockey wheel (and possibly hitch).
1 - 1500Kg is the max weight the main axle.

MTPLM is the maximum total mass of the van when being towed.

There was another thread on registering the trailer. Is it actually needed for a private caravan being towed by a non-commercial vehicle?

Yes the new regulations came in a few weeks ago

The regulations have been in effect for the UK since 2018 although, for some reason or other, no-one bothered about it until very recently, not even the government website.

Looks like I never caught up with the last part of the thread, and it does indeed seem to apply to caravans. Another wonderful Brexit legacy... 🤦‍♂️

It only applies if you are taking the caravan abroad. It only has anything to do with Brexit inasmuch as the concession not to have to have the caravan registered only applies to countries within the EEA, so it's not a new law. It has, therefore, all along been a concession that no longer applies to the UK since Brexit, not a requirement.

Yeah - that's what I meant about Brexit. When the UK was part of the EU, there was an implicit exemption. With the UK now being a separate entity, the registration is needed. It is the same change that invokes the 90 days in 180 days rule, and changes to import duty and import restrictions. But we do get blue passports in return... 🤦‍♂️

Don’t forget the changes to the dog passport now that we are classed as a Third Country.

The plate is white with black letters in a square plate and does not have to be illuminated. - Look out for UK lorries now that that travel abroad and you will spot one on their back.

MTPLM is the maximum total mass of the van when being towed.

I think it might help to clarify this just a little. MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permitted Laden Mass) is the NCC's theoretical mass limit for the whole caravan. You have to weigh the complete caravan on its own uncoupled from the car to be able to check your caravan has not exceeded its MTPLM.

Sum of load on road wheels plus the load on the jockey wheel must be no greater than the trailers MTPLM.

The NCC‘s theoretical mass limit is not the MTPLM. The actual MTPLM is what is displayed on the statutory plate (if the caravan was built after implementation of whole vehicle type approval in 2014). Foreign authorities will only go by what is internationally understood and that’s the statutory plate, not anything that the NCC concocted.
In the OP‘s case, the two values happen to be the same, (probably because the NCC details and the statutory plate have been combined in the same sticker - something that I believe only the Explorer Group does), but that will not always be so.
